A little google app

April 21st, 2007

I actually use the google customized homepage as my homepage so being able to do quick searches of packages.gentoo.org has some advantages right away. It allows me to get to bugs for packages and forum topics within two clicks, so for me its a handy tool to have around. Its based off the original tool that Halcy0n wrote, with minor modifications but original credit goes to him, I just modified it to use a better to me interface for finding quickly what I need. If anyone wants to use it, its located at this location. You’ll need to go to your add tools page and click the add url. Add that and you’ll have a quick packages.gentoo.org search on your homepage.

Oh and please leave a comment if you actually use it. I’d like to know if you actually will use it.

edit: fixed the app as I’m a doofus

Hey, I tried adding it through the “add url” link and it didn’t work. Dunno if this is related or not, but firefox barfs with the following error when I try to view it:

    XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
    Location: http://tsunam.org/temp/packages-gentoo-org.xml
Line Number 7, Column 27: author=”Joshua Jackson & Mark Loeser”

I get an error message when I click your link…
As for search in packages.gentoo.org: I added a custom quicksearch to firefox with
    ‘Location’ : http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=%s
    ‘Keyword’ : gp
So I just hit Ctrl+T, which opens a blank tab and then type ‘gp foo’

As I said I couldn’t access that link, so I don’t know whether that app gives additional benefits…

Just wondering, do you know http://en.serchilo.net/ ? Its like outsourcing your quicksearches, its quick, intuitive and there are a lot of them (http://en.serchilo.net/?q=all) - just set your about:config-property keyword.URL in any mozilla-browser to http://en.serchilo.net/?q=

Sorry to throw this all over ;)

Both google homepage and serchilo approaches seem to just reinvent what firefox (and pretty sure other browsers too) can already do in the address bar (which I can get to via just one keyboard shortcut). In firefox it’s via ‘quick searches’ under bookmarks.
