Traveling

November 30th, 2006

As might be noted in my short lifespan, I’ve traveled a little bit and I will once again be disappearing on the 12th to go to Seoul, South Korea. With traveling I’ve learned some of the tricks to traveling in comfort and style. However I have one ever so annoying issue currently.

I have the classic hip slinging laptop bag and its more annoyance then its worth. So when you travel what do you use to tote around your laptop, ipod, psp/nintendo ds, various cables including (fiber, ethernet, usb -> db9, serial) reading material (no its not porn, books actually). Some snacks and various other things like a spare toothbrush in case of luggage going missing?

A backpack. Mine is a nice Jansport number with two main compartments, plus the obligatory smaller one on the outermost layer. Fortunately, despite all the storage available, it’s no bigger than the average school-ish backpack. I also have a stylish shoulder bag for lugging around the laptop in relative comfort, if not security. No big ugly heavy leather tote bags for me, thanks!

Oh, and when you go, make sure you bring your mp3 player. Make sure make sure make sure. And make sure you have spare batteries or some way of charging them as well — there’s a good chance Korea doesn’t use the same wall plugs/voltage standards we have here in the USA. If you don’t have a WiFi card for your lappy, now might be the time to get one. Oh, and make sure you have a jacket that can handle wet weather. Korea is damp. And sunglasses. Sunglasses are key. :)

Hey… I use a Jansport backpack too, but mine (you minght remember) is one of those ones that goes over your shoulder and across your chest. I would not recomend it to anyone. After several years of use, I’ve grown to hate it. I do however use one of the bags that bangs against your hips too, and like you, I’d like to find something different. The problem is: I’m not sure that I wouldn’t get one of those hip banging ones again. I do like them… and if it has a handle at the top like mine does, when going through the airplane, you can hold it instead of smacking people and seats with it.

One thing that we have also found to be handy… one of those passport holders that you wear like a necklace. I can’t begin to tell you how anoying it is to be digging through your bags to find your ticket, etc. when you are already in line to board.

I know, I wasn’t much help here, but hopefully someone out there will know a trick that we don’t. I just asked my travelling mother what she likes, and all she could come up with is a backpack made for laptops and the passport holder.

Backpack made for laptops. Mine is a Swiss Army and is the best purchase I’ve ever made.
